Creating The Perfect Zen Space At Home
I don’t care who you are, where you're from, what you do, what stage of life you are in...everyone is dealing with something. The magic is in how you handle it. So, when I find I need to clear my head, compartmentalize my thoughts and destress, I like to go outside. Anywhere outside really. Botanical garden, a walk down a quiet path, the beach. And, I like to be alone.
Unfortunately, I don’t live in an area conducive to being outside all year round, but my mental state of mind is a priority. I need to be able to find my zen. So, that means I need to find a way to create a zen space at home that I can utilize regardless of the weather.
First, to find a space.
That may seem like a simple task since it is currently just my husband and I living in our house, and therefore I should have plenty of quiet spaces to choose from. But even though we repainted his bedroom and changed out the furniture, and even though he moved out a couple of months ago after having moved back home briefly during the pandemic, my son’s room, an abundance of quiet solitude, has a smattering of his stuff still in it. My daughter is a bit of hybrid. She is about to graduate from college, but most likely will be moving back home after, at least for a bit, and her space is very much “her space”. There is the guest room that is only used occasionally, but sometimes the guests are the reason I need the zen in the first place. And, since our guest room is on our first floor, my dogs would never leave me alone if they knew I was in there. There is the basement, but it is cold down there and that’s my work space.
With further reflection, I realized that I often go to my bedroom to sit quietly even for a minute. I have a family heirloom I keep in my bedroom. An orange, velvet chair that was at my grandparents house, that I loved and I made sure ended up in my position. But, even though I go to that spot in my bedroom whenever I need to, it is in desperate need of a makeover.
Not the chair. The chair is perfect!
The spot.
So, I started to think about where are the places I go where I immediately exhale the minute I get there? As I mentioned earlier, I like to be anywhere outside...walking.
I need to bring the outside in!
I started by moving my fabulous heirloom chair to a different location in my bedroom. I moved it around to a few different spots and even sat in it to see if that space worked. Once I found the spot, I bought a few easy growing indoor houseplants (succlents included, of course!) and a repurposed accent table to put them on. I also love candles. So, I added a candle with my current favorite scent of the season (balsam). A motivating mini print finishes it off, and now I have the perfect zen space to sit, reflect, read, or write!
Want to create your own perfect zen space?
Follow my check-list below:
Find a a quiet spot in your house where you can be meditative, even if you don’t meditate.
Think about where it is you feel most at peace. What is surrounding you?
Determine how you plan to use your perfect zen space? Will you read? Will you write? Will you draw? Will you just sit and think? Will you listen to music?
Find elements that work within your space. A favorite chair or a comfy floor pillow. A small table or shelf.
Accessorize. Add some plants. A candle. A picture with your favorite quote or phrase.
Now, put it all together and sit back and exhale!!
